UNCSA alumni are among nominees for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards

Awards season is in full swing for the film and television industry, and alumni from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Drama and School of Filmmaking are in the mix, appearing in or working on such heralded films as “Coco,” “Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and television programs including “Stranger Things” and “This Is Us.”

Films nominated for Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, and their UNCSA connections available at press time, include:

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

“Coco,” nominated for a Golden Globe Award as Best Animated Movie, features Natalia Cordova-Buckley, a 2001 high school graduate of the School of Drama, voicing the character of Frida Kahlo.

“I, Tonya” – nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture-Comedy. Michael Sledd (Film ’01) is a co-producer.

“Lady Bird,” nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Picture-Comedy and for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Lucas Hedges (Drama) and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Drama ’72) are in the cast.

“Mudbound,” nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Dylan Arnold (Drama ’16) is in the cast.

“The Greatest Showman,” nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Picture-Comedy. Tiffany Little Canfield (Drama ’00) was casting director.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Picture-Drama and for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Lucas Hedges is in the cast. 

“The Disaster Artist,” nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Picture-Comedy. Brett Gelman (Drama ’99) appears in an uncredited role as an acting teacher.

“Dunkirk,” nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Picture-Drama. Austin Elliot (Film ’15) was a production assistant.

Television programs nominated for Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards, and their UNCSA connections available at press time, include:

“Stranger Things” on Netflix, nominated for a Golden Globe as Best TV Series-Drama and for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Brett Gelman is in the cast and Meredith Kelley Hannah (Film ’13) worked as a production assistant.

“This is Us” on NBC, nominated for a Golden Globe as Best TV Series-Drama and for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Tiffany Little Canfield is casting director, Vera Herbert (Film ’11) is a writer and producer, and Megan West (Drama 13) and Krys Marshall (Drama 05) made guest appearances.

Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes will be televised at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 on NBC.

The SAG Awards, presented by Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists will be televised at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21 on TBS and TNT.
