UNCSA dance film premiere explores life, the experiences and people who shape us

“Before We Go,” a contemporary dance piece choreographed by UNCSA alumnus Grady McLeod Bowman (B.F.A. ’05) for the 2022 UNCSA Spring Dance performance, features 31 dance students and explores the lives we lead and the experiences and people who shape us – either artistically or in relationships.

Bowman is an NYC-based international choreographer and creative artist whose work has spanned Broadway, off-Broadway, television, circus, dance companies and universities. Bowman was praised as "exceptionally versatile" and "on the rise” by “Dance Magazine.” He also received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for best choreography for “Singin' in the Rain” at the Olney Theatre Center.

The cinematic recreation of “Before We Go” was brought to life by UNCSA videographer Adam Witmer, with music by Jacob Collier, scenery by Scene Design student Gabby Nunez in collaboration with Molo Design Limited, lighting by Lighting Design student Elijah Thomas, props by Stage Properties student Mahalet Andargachew and costume design by Dance Costume Shop Director Marissa McCullough .

School of dance students in this piece includes Nyah Banks, Nick Buynitzky, Laney Castelloe, Giovanni Castellon, Lily Chan, Jadyn Corral, Deanna Cudjoe, Ethan Digby-New, Mason Gaddis, Charlee George, Naya Gonzalez, Alexa Grady, Jarrod Harrell, Adelyn Harris, Quetzali Hart, Terra Hernandez, Jaala McCall, Will Meeks, Josie Moore, Sophia Pielet, Taylor Pinney, Kendall Ramirez, Khi'shawn Robinson, Elyse Scalia, Kerry Shannon, Kerry Sheehan, Julia Shoffner, Hikaru Smith, Sophia Smith, Yu Yao Sutherland and Tianyu Wang.
