Two sonatas, two composers, two performers and two journeys across continents come together in an evening of bold contrasts and rediscovered masterworks.

Faculty artist Oskar Espina Ruiz, clarinet, and Victoria Schwartzman, piano, present a program centered on sonatas by Mieczysław Weinberg and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Both sonatas were written in the same year, yet shaped by radically different artistic voices and paths of exile.

Weinberg’s sonata unfolds in a poetic, sometimes enigmatic language, while Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s work reveals lyrical clarity and virtuosic brilliance. The conversation expands as these works are placed in broader musical context with music by Sergei Prokofiev, Andreia Pinto-Correia and Francis Poulenc — illuminating possible influences and descendants of each composer’s style.
