Clery Act Compliance

The Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, commonly known as the Clery Act, is a federal mandate requiring all institutions of higher education (IHEs) that participate in the federal student financial aid program to disclose information about crime on their campuses and in the surrounding communities. The Clery Act affects all public and private IHEs that receive federal financial aid and is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Campuses that fail to comply with the act can be penalized with large fines and may be suspended from participating in the federal financial aid program. 

The Clery Act requires institutions of higher education to take specific actions to promote campus safety and transparency. UNCSA complies with the following core requirements: 

• Collect, classify, and count crime reports and statistics for incidents that occur within Clery-defined geography. 
• Maintain a daily crime and fire log that records alleged criminal incidents and residential fires occurring on or near campus. 
• Submit annual crime statistics to the U.S. Department of Education. 
• Issue timely warning notifications for Clery Act crimes that pose a continuing threat to the campus community. 
• Send emergency alerts upon confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees. 
• Publish and distribute an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report by October 1 each year. This report includes safety and security policies, crime statistics, fire safety information, and fire statistics for on-campus student housing. It is made available to all current and prospective students and employees. 

Who Was Jeanne Clery 

is named in memory of Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old freshman at Lehigh University who was tragically raped and murdered in her campus residence hall by another student she did not know. 

In the wake of Jeanne’s death, her parents became advocates for campus safety reform. Their efforts led to the passage of the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to disclose information about crimes that occur on or near campus-owned or controlled property. 

Over time, the Clery Act has evolved to strengthen crime prevention efforts, improve transparency, and ensure institutions provide timely and accurate information to help keep campus communities safe.
