Campus Security Authority

Campus Security Authority

The University is obligated, under the Clery Act, to identify and train Campus Security Authorities (CSAs). Campus Security Authorities are required to report any Clery qualifying crimes and offenses that they become aware of to University Police. CSAs are notified of this designation and are required to complete training on their obligations annually. CSAs are not expected to investigate any incidents.

Campus Security Authority is defined as:

  • A campus police department or a campus security department of an institution.
  • Any individual or individuals who have responsibility for campus security but who do not constitute a campus police department or a campus security department (e.g., an individual who is responsible for monitoring the entrance into institutional property).
  • Any individual or organization specified in an institution’s statement of campus security policy as an individual or organization to which students and employees should report criminal offenses.
  • An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline and campus judicial proceedings.  Examples include director of athletics, team coach, residence hall director and faculty advisor to a student group. A single teaching faculty member is unlikely to have significant responsibility for student and campus activities, except when serving as an advisor to a student group. Clerical staff, as well, are unlikely to have significant responsibility for student and campus activities. Pastoral or professional counselors acting in their professional capacities are excluded from the definition of “Campus Security Authority.”

Clery Reporting

The purpose of the Clery Act is to encourage accurate and timely reporting of campus crime statistics in order to provide information to the campus community to promote crime awareness and enhance campus safety.
