Alejandro Cuellar

Alejandro Cuellar, bass, hails from San Antonio, Texas, and is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute, where he studies with Dr. Marilyn Taylor. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a Distinction in Vocal Performance from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2023.

Cuellar’s recent engagements include an apprenticeship with Sarasota Opera during its 2026 season, where he performed the role of Sergente in La Bohème, appeared in three scenes concerts, and served as a chorister in La Bohème, The Merry Widow, Il Trovatore, and Susannah. The season marked the conclusion of legendary Artistic Director and Conductor Victor DeRenzi’s 44-year tenure with the company. Cuellar had the distinction of working with DeRenzi and participating in a masterclass with him during the season.

In 2025, Cuellar made his mainstage debut with Opera West! in Santa Fe as Pinellino in Gianni Schicchi, in a production featuring the world premiere of a new English libretto. That same year, he made his international debut with Clyde Opera in Glasgow, Scotland, as Zuniga in Carmen.

His operatic repertoire also includes Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni. Cuellar has participated in numerous young artist programs, including OPERA San Antonio/Classical Music Institute in 2023 and 2024 and OperaWorks in Atlanta in 2024. As a bass chorister with OPERA San Antonio and Austin Opera, he has appeared in productions including Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Verdi’s Requiem, and Kevin Puts’ The Manchurian Candidate.

Equally at home in concert repertoire, Cuellar has appeared as a bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s The Creation. He maintains an active career in professional church music and brings a broad background in music education to his artistic work, having served as a clinician, adjudicator, director, and voice teacher for high school programs throughout Central Texas.

With a growing body of operatic, concert, and ensemble experience, Cuellar is establishing himself as a versatile young bass whose work reflects both a strong musical foundation and a commitment to the operatic stage.
