Shelby Denise Smith is an actress and singer who is originally from the outskirts of Nashville, Tennessee. Her passion for acting began at twelve years old, when she was cast in a production within her middle school’s “drama club”. Since that fateful moment, she knew that acting was the craft that she wanted to dedicate her life to pursuing.
Shelby has since made appearances professionally, including playing “Sarah” in
Nashville Repertory Theatre’s Ragtime and “Emma” in Harold Pinter’s Betrayal with
Santa Cruz Shakespeare. Shelby is also a fourth-year acting major at UNCSA, and some
of her most prolific roles have included “Rosamund” in The Robber Bridegroom, Ulysses
in Troilus and Cressida, and most recently, Mama Nadi in Ruined.
At the core of Shelby’s artistry is the desire to create a more compassionate world through the soul and wit of stories. From an early age, Shelby has understood the transformative power of narrative. She has seen how a striking performance can reconstruct a person's entire worldview and become an avenue for a sense of connection and transcendency that wasn’t possible before. Stories have also become a way that Shelby gives dignity and voice to people who feel hopeless and broken. She ultimately hopes that her vulnerability will touch the hearts of audiences and heal the parts of their souls that need encouragement and repair.
