Ida Bieler featured on 'Leaps & Bounds: The Music of Lance Hulme'
UNCSA violin faculty member Ida Bieler is featured on "Leaps & Bounds: The Music of Lance Hulme," a new recording highlighting
works by North Carolina composer Lance Hulme, winner of the 2021 International Malta
Composition Competition.
The album includes Hulme’s solo violin piece “An Eternal Flame,” dedicated to the
people of Ukraine and inspired by a poem by Alicia Richards. Bieler’s performance
has drawn high praise, with Fanfare Magazine noting her “melodies swoop like a curlew…maintaining
a perfect sense of underlying pulse,” calling the work “cripplingly difficult” and
"a testament to Bieler's abilities that we hear this as a powerful piece of music."
Hulme, who teaches at North Carolina Central University, speaks about the collaboration
and Bieler’s performance in a recent video interview, reflecting on their longstanding
musical connection across Europe.
