Sam, the Mime
UNCSA Drama student Sam Sherman joined my Diggs-Latham Elementary math class for a fun romp! He tapped into his amazing acting skills and mime training to embody being trapped in 3D shapes. Sam’s very clear, visually compelling demonstration (using the Red Nose drama technique) was an effective way to help my students learn 3D shapes within a space. This was a joint effort between a music, film, dance, and a drama student to teach this lesson, and it went very well. The students thought it was amazing.
Production Design Lesson
In an effort to expose our students to all aspects of filmmaking, we've brought in guest artists who reflect a different aspect of filmmaking. Filmmaking as a medium is so multifaceted in its nature so we wanted to represent some of the lesser known disciplines such as Production Designer. So we enlisted a friend of the program, third year film student, Grant West, to teach a guest lecture. He brought in models, dioramas, moving working miniature sets, sketches, drafts, and look-books/color palettes! The tangibility of the material deeply resonated with the class we were teaching.
