Ahhh, yes, work/life balance, something that everyone preaches you should have, but no one seems to have mastered. Even going on my 25th year of life, I find that I still really struggle with this. Being a student at UNCSA and serving with ArtistCorps requires a significant amount of your time, and certainly a lot of 'balancing' in order to stay on top of things. Luckily, sometimes I find that my ArtistCorps work offers a nice contrast to what I do at school the other days of the week, and that really seems to compliment and balance my life as a musician.
One strategy that I use in order to make sure I am managing my work/life balance is to plan ahead! It seems so simple, but this is the best approach I have found so far. This can sometimes mean planning time for a coffee or a break, or time to work on a project and practice here, and a fun activity there. Regardless of what it is, it requires me being OK both with the time that I am spending working/practicing and just enjoying life. I find especially with my ArtistCorps work that I often wish I was doing it more and more often. But in order to achieve this level of balance, we have to work harder to make sure the time we spend at our sites is meaningful and worthwhile, no matter how much time we spend there.
