Serving with Senior Services this Year

Author: Grace Pfleger

Serving with Senior Services last semester was really successful. I started going to new facilities and recruited many volunteers. In November, I brought some artist volunteers to lead and participate in a ballroom dancing class. That was a hit! Even those who could not participate enjoyed watching our young legs move.

In December I put together an acapella quartet and we had a fun tour of schools, retirement homes, and the Williams Adult Day Center. When I was not doing these special events, every Wednesday I continued delivering meals with Meals on Wheels and singing a different song to the residents each week. Along with singing, the volunteers and I spent much time chatting with our seniors about their lives and ours. Friendships were inevitably formed!

This semester began strong. I sang at two new facilities, both very welcoming to me. However, the challenge was aligning my schedule with the Meal on Wheels volunteers in the field. Many of these volunteers have been doing this for years and do not have much flexibility in their schedules. So, for most of the weeks, I ended up going to the same facility, seeing the same people, with the same volunteer. I truly loved serving those residents and formed a great friendship with all of them. However, I hope to find a way to visit more sites and meet more people in the future. All of this is to say the challenge that I faced this semester was finding a way to expand my service outside of my special events and serve more of the community.
