One really uplifting experience I've had during my time with ArtistsCorps was the MLK read-in event (a virtual program for local children sponsored by Wake Forest, Winston-Salem State and UNCSA). I participated with my ArtistCorps peers in creating a Zoom performance of "Horton Hears a Who." It was so much fun to get back into acting and especially for such a good cause. The children loved the performance, which taught them that every voice and every person matters, no matter how small they are. "A person's a person no matter how small," Horton says.
It was so inspiring to see the children participating and learning. I was definitely out of my comfort zone because I have not acted in a long time, we had to make our own costumes and props and we all were in separate locations due to COVID. But not only did the children learn and grow, I did as well. I'm glad I was able to be a part of something so much bigger than me.
