Confronting the Unknown

Author: Bentley Dorics

Starting my service at Ashley Academy, I had no clear expectations. I went into it by myself, expecting to meet with the music teacher immediately before the class, without much planning. If there is one thing you must know about me, it is that I am an avid, stringent planner. I know everything that comes my way (within my control) and I have times and dates for all events. So, going into my first day at Ashley Academy without knowing exactly what was going to happen left me feeling quite frazzled and apprehensive about this new experience I was taking on.

On the first visit, I observed how Ms. Jackson, the music teacher at Ashley, worked and approached her students. I got to introduce myself and let them know what I do.  It was a little frustrating, not being able to jump in and get engaged right away, but getting to gauge the energy level of the students and understand where they were musically was surprisingly helpful and enough for my first day.

The week after, I was able to engage a little more, and we played some rhythm karaoke. It was exciting to see the students so connected with the music that they knew and loved from the latest popular Disney movies. It was then that I knew the little things like getting to sing altogether and clap our hands and watch the courageous characters like Moana and Elsa sing their songs, were all I needed to connect with the students. My being present is meaningful to them, even if it is for only a few songs and dance breaks.

I look forward to the special moments like these that await in the future, especially alongside those moments of frustration and uncertainty. They make for all the difference in knowing when you get something to truly resonate with your students. I know that it will be a strengthening experience for me, and I am so appreciative to have this opportunity.
