I have been teaching each Friday in the orchestra room at Diggs-Latham Elementary since mid-January. Working with third, fourth and fifth graders once a week on the violin is by no means an easy task. I am at least twice the students' age and they were very nervous, anxious, timid, and some even cried, at first. However, as the weeks went by, the students opened up, and I was able to start conversations with them about music and their daily lives. I then started to expose them to the exciting moments on the violin by playing them some virtuosic passages from various pieces. Most students were quite amazed at the capability of the violin. It sparked their enthusiasm and helped them value the importance of music. During these weeks, it has been very rewarding for me to see the students' effort and attitude improve during the limited time together. As soon as the students start to open up with me, they learn better and remember things longer. This whole experience has been life-changing for me as I see my impact as an artist on those around us in our community.
