Music Between Us Overview

Music Between Us Overview

Music Between Us was created at UNCSA as an ArtistCorps program. The initiative was conceived and developed by School of Music faculty member Allison Gagnon to mobilize music students in service with those living with dementia.

It uses the powerful connections between music and the brain to reach those living with dementia, opening pathways to communication and to an enhanced quality of life, and diminishing the degree of social isolation so often experienced.

Through interactive musicmaking in dementia care, participants:

  • Experience moments of joy through singing and movement
  • Interact socially with members, with staff, and with one another
  • Communicate more easily despite cognitive decline

Through interactive musicmaking in dementia care, team members:

  • Use their musical skills and develop their skills of communication
  • Learn collaboration and teamwork
  • Enjoy personal growth while serving the community

Music Between Us provides “boots on the ground” in dementia care, and meaningful service for our student musicians. Learn more about the program through the links below.
