Dear UNCSA Community,
I am heartbroken over the tragic and senseless shooting that occurred earlier today
at Mt. Tabor High School and learning that one of their students, William Chavis Renard
Miller Jr., was killed.
If you have a child or friend attending Mt. Tabor, or are related to one of their
teachers or staff members, please know that we stand in solidarity with you, as well
as our community as we grapple with the difficult reality and aftermath of what has
occurred.
UNCSA Police and Public Safety issued a safety alert to our campus soon after the
shooting occurred at Mt. Tabor, which is located across town, 20 minutes away from
UNCSA. While there has been no threat to our campus, we have and will continue to
monitor the situation as it develops. Our Police Department is in constant communication
with local authorities. We have learned that a suspect is now in custody.
If you or someone you know is experiencing fear, anxiety or depression about these
events, please remember that your campus resources are here to help. Students may
contact Counseling Services, and employees may contact the Employee Assistance Program.
As I’ve shared before, the health, safety and well-being of our campus is the top
priority for all of us. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the UNCSA Alert system and review the UNCSA Police guidelines for an active shooter so you can be aware and knowledgeable about how to protect yourself. Chief Frank
Brinkley will share additional information about campus safety tomorrow.
It is unfathomable just how many senseless acts of violence have occurred around the
country and within our schools — and every one is one too many. This event has affected
us all even more deeply because it happened right here in our own hometown. Please
keep all of those affected in your thoughts, and care for yourselves and each other.
Sincerely,
Brian Cole
Chancellor
