Many Hands: Scene Painting for Opera

In the School of Design and Production, every brushstroke plays a part in shaping the magic of live performance. In this behind-the-scenes look, students in the Scene Painting and Scenic Art concentrations open their studio doors and share how they created the dramatic scenery of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute’s production of "Maria di Rohan."

Led by renowned faculty member Susan Crabtree, scenic painting teaches students the artistry and precision of large-scale scenic painting — where colors, textures and perspectives must be carefully considered. Learn about the collaborative process, the balance of fine detail and bold effect, and the satisfaction of seeing a stage transformed into a vibrant, living world.

From concept to completion, “Many Hands” highlights the craft, dedication and teamwork of Scenic Paint students that made the opera come alive.
