How a year at UNCSA helped David LaChapelle see the world differently

What do Andy Warhol, Elton John and Tupac Shakur have in common? They’ve all been captured through the lens of world-renowned photographer and alumnus David LaChapelle (H.S. Visual Arts '81).

We sat down with the legendary LaChapelle as he reflected on his formative year in the School of Design and Production Visual Arts program — a time he describes as “the best place I could possibly be" and where he discovered his love for photography.

From his early fascination with realism to photographing icons, LaChapelle’s creative journey has been defined by a lifelong desire to stand apart and tell stories that matter. His signature mix of surrealism and social commentary, often inspired by issues like climate change and spirituality, continues to evolve.
