Mya Johnson

Mya Johnson is originally from Sanford, North Carolina, where she was introduced to competitive dance at age ten and began training in styles such as Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Acro, Hip-hop, Musical Theater, and Contemporary. Competing fueled her passion and commitment to dance and blossomed into a love for the arts, expanding beyond dance Mya learned to sing, draw, and is currently taking acting classes and learning how to play guitar.

She is pursuing her BFA in Contemporary Dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. During her time at UNCSA Mya has had the privilege to study under esteemed faculty members including Brenda Daniels, Abigail Yager, Ming-Lung Yang, Emily Nicolauo, Jared Redick, and more through her training of Cunningham, Limón, Horton, Musical Theater, West African, Groundwork, Ballet, Partnering, Improvisation and Composition. Her performance experience includes new and restaged works by choreographers such as José Limón, Kimberly Bartosik, DaVon Doane, Neta Pulvermacher, Ming-Lung Yang, Fernando Carrillo, and Wesley Williams.

She also served as a rehearsal assistant for new works by the Dean of Dance Endalyn T. Outlaw and UNCSA contemporary dance alumni Kendall Ramirez. This in addition with training at UNCSA has enriched her understanding of choreographic processes and performance versatility.

Looking forward, Mya is committed to expanding her choreographic and artistic voice, sharing her knowledge through teaching, and continuing to grow on this journey of becoming a professional dancer, hoping to join a contemporary dance company, dance on Broadway and in film.
