Hatch is a choreographic incubator led by School of Dance faculty member Taryn Griggs connecting UNCSA contemporary dance college seniors (aka the Pluck Project) with UNCSA Dance alumni actively working within the dance landscape of New York
City.
The creation of Hatch is possible due to the partnership and generous support of the
Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts.
About Hatch
Hatch as a noun is "a small door or opening," and when used as a verb means "to bring
into being." The Hatch initiative will serve as both an entry point for UNCSA contemporary
dance seniors into the New York dance and performance world and as a platform for
alumni choreographers to explore new ideas.
From April 29-May 3, 2024, four alumni choreographers will create four original small
group works with the Pluck Project students at the LaMama Studios in New York. Some
rehearsals will be open to the public to view the students and alumni choreographers
in process throughout the week.
The week will culminate in an informal showing of the four works and a social event
for dancers, choreographers and industry professionals. The four works will be shared
in the
Agnes de Mille Theatre before graduation on May 17, 2024, for the campus community and families of the program
participants the evening.
The first cohort of alumni choreographers are Dominica Greene (Dance ‘16), Ayo Jackson
(Dance ‘99, 2022 UNCSA Artpreneur Alumni of the Year), Adrienne Westwood (Dance ‘03),
and Ian Spencer Bell (Dance ‘96).
