Health and Wellness Committee Updates

The health and well-being of UNCSA students, faculty and staff are integral to academic, professional and personal success and represent a vital asset within the portfolio of student life offerings. 

Mental Health Support Infrastructure

Spring 2024

  • Student Affairs in partnership with Human Resources launched two new programs from the UNC System Office to implement QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) and GUIDE (Guiding Universities in Demonstrating Empathy).
    • QPR - The goal of QPR is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical, and proven suicide prevention training. This is a 60-minute course that will be available to faculty, staff and students that can be taken in person or online. UNCSA hosted a QPR Instructor training program on campus in February 2024 and another five instructors were trained from UNCSA for six instructors. These instructors will provide ongoing training opportunities for the UNCSA community.
    • GUIDE - A one-time, three-hour empathic communications training that empowers faculty and staff to conduct effective student support conversations. GUIDE is meant to prevent student challenges from becoming mental health crises. UNCSA hosted two programs during the spring semester.
  • Student Affairs with support from the UNC System Office offered and will continue several initiatives for students:
    • IT Matters is a suite of online modules aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of college students and targets sleep wellness and mental health. Expanded telepsychiatry services with NC Neuropsychiatry for students.
  • Continued support from UWill provides students with free, immediate access to teletherapy online, as well as mental health crisis lines. Licensed clinical therapists are available for virtual appointments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, including extended holiday and summer breaks.
    • After 10 months of utilizing UWill, over 300 students have engaged with the platform, achieving a student satisfaction rate of over 90%.
    • Students new to UNCSA receive information on resources through UWill as part of the new student orientation programming.

Fall 2023

  • Student Affairs received grant funding from the UNC System Office to implement QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). The goal of QPR is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. UNCSA will host a QPR Instructor training program on campus in February 2024.
  • Student Affairs also received funding for GUIDE (Guiding Universities in Demonstrating Empathy), which will include a one-time, three-hour empathic communications training that empowers faculty and staff to conduct effective student support conversations.
  • UNCSA Parent Leadership Circle launched UWill, which provides students free, immediate access to teletherapy online, as well as mental health crisis lines.
  • The Chancellor and Provost reported on findings and plans from the Collaborative Scheduling Initiative core committee.

Spring 2023

  • The Provost Office in coordination with Student Affairs conducted a student survey to obtain feedback on Student Wellness Days in April. Preliminary data indicates that students find these days beneficial.
  • Student Affairs, in partnership with Human Resources, will launch two new programs for the Fall 2023 semester:

  • Two newly created positions will help support student well-being:
    • A new High School Wellness Counselor, Will Rives, is devoted to providing programing and support for our high school students. He is a licensed therapist and an alum of both our high school and college programs.
    • A newly-created Student Assistance and Support Case Manager position will provide additional support to all students. Interviews have begun and the individual will be hired by July 1, 2023. 
  • Human Resources sponsored two Employee Wellness Days on Feb. 17 and Apr. 12.  A variety of activities included workshops, an ice cream social and more.
  • Student Affairs sponsored two Student Wellness Days on Feb. 17 and Apr. 12.  A variety of activities included mindfulness sessions, outdoor music and games, Italian ice, hiking and nature walks, a Bollywood dance class, drum circles and more.
  • The Library hosted wellness activities in Learning Commons for the entire campus, including crafts, puzzles and games, print you own posters in the Makerspace and Blind Date with a Book.

Fall 2022

  • Human Resources sponsored an employee appreciation week for faculty and staff, including a variety of autumn activities, flu clinic, chair massages and more.
  • Student Affairs sponsored a Fall Festival with outdoor games, food and time for community building, Wellness Wednesdays, Pickle Con during Intensive Arts and more.

 

Student Well-Being and Safety

Spring 2024

  • In Spring 2024, Student Affairs conducted a comprehensive assessment with students to establish a baseline evaluation some of the preliminary data suggested that those current measures around health, wellness, and safety.
    • During this academic year, updates to the Fitness Center's equipment and facilities have been made. Students report that these improvements have had a positive impact on their experience, with current satisfaction at 80%.
    • Additionally, enhancements to safety and security measures, including an overnight security presence and updated processes for students leaving campus, have resulted in a 93% satisfaction rate among high school students.
    • With an increased focus on activities that engage and connect students with their peers to better support their overall health and wellness, high school students report a 79% positive impact on their academic experience, while college students report a 90% positive impact.

Fall 2023

  • Hired Fulton McSwain Jr., inaugural Coordinator of Gender Violence Prevention and Survivor Advocacy.*
  • The UNCSA Department of Police and Public Safety adopted a new and more inclusive training for the UNCSA Community titled “All Inclusive Physical Defense Training,” and can be delivered without the gender and time constraints imposed by the previous program.*
  • The functions and concerns of a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) have been and are still being addressed by the Student Support Team (SST).*
  • Strategic Communications and the Office of Title IX completed the HFNC reccomended website updates for Safe at UNCSA.*
  • To date, School of Drama, D&P and Dance have completed their annual art school intimacy training. Filmmaking is schedule for late January, and Music later in spring 2024.*
  • UNCSA Department of Police and Public Safety reviewed and updated our mutual aid agreement with WSPD.

Spring 2023

  • The committee heard from Campus Police (campus safety), chair of Faculty Council and chair of Staff Council and plans to meet with Student Body President early in the fall semester.
  • Confirmed plans to review the JED Campus Plan from 2019, which was developed with funding from UNC System Office behavioral health grant.

Fall 2022

  • Established a plan to hear from Campus Police, chair of Faculty Council, chair of Staff Council, and president of SGA.
  • Agreed to review the 2019 JED Campus Plan, which provided recommendations to address student well-being. JED Campus is a nationwide initiative of the Jed Foundation designed to empower schools with a framework and customized support to enhance student mental health and suicide and substance abuse prevention efforts. The JED initiative will help UNCSA create positive, lasting, systemic change in the campus community.
