Feel the energy of music and movement coming to life as Winter Dance delivers a dazzling mix of ballet and contemporary works paired with live orchestral performance in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The program highlights rich narratives that transform literary, musical and cultural inspirations into vivid contemporary expression — providing the perfect setting for music and dance to meet, respond to and reshape one another in real time.

Winter Dance introduces world premieres by choreographers Jorma Elo and alumnus Jeffery Bullock (H.S. Dance ’81), and a contemporary work by Armando Braswell. The second half of the program opens with a musical overture of Aaron Copland’s iconic “Fanfare for the Common Man,” performed by the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra — setting the stage for audiences to view the evolving voice of American artistry through a powerful blend of music and movement.

Choreographer Phil Chan premieres a story ballet with original music by American composer Larry Moore. UNCSA Composition student Victoria King (B.M. ’27) then premieres a new work choreographed by a UNCSA Dance student. The evening concludes with School of Dance Dean Endalyn T. Outlaw offering her choreographic interpretation of Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.”
