Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)

The Junior Appalachian Music (JAM) Program at the UNCSA Community Music School introduces young musicians to the rich traditions of Appalachian music in a welcoming, after-school group setting. Designed as an entry point into old-time and bluegrass styles, JAM focuses on fiddle, banjo, and guitar, with opportunities for ensemble playing, performance, and community music-making.

Students learn primarily by ear, honoring the oral traditions that have shaped Appalachian music for generations. In addition to instrumental instruction, the program incorporates elements of Appalachian culture, history, and old-time dance, helping students connect music to its cultural roots. Emphasizing collaboration, listening, and shared learning, JAM builds foundational musical skills while fostering confidence, friendships, and a strong sense of community.

Modeled after the nationally recognized Junior Appalachian Musicians network, the UNCSA JAM Program connects students to a thriving regional tradition and a larger community of young musicians across the Southeast. Whether students are new to these instruments or looking to deepen their ensemble experience, JAM offers an engaging and joyful way to learn, play, and grow through music.
