The Contemporary Dance program prepares talented young dancers to for careers in professional companies throughout the world. Performance opportunities are numerous, with concerts throughout the year, many of which feature student choreography. Recent repertory choices feature a strong mix of the classic and cutting edge, with pieces by Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, José Limón, Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris. Contemporary students are also able to “taste” a variety of different styles during the Intensive Arts workshops, such as ballroom dance, hip-hop, African and Jazz. The School of Dance is open to college-age students, as well as a program for high school students.
Five members of the class of 2020 are recipients of Student Artpreneur Grants of $2,500 each to support their creative work or creative enterprise: Tramaine Raphael Gray, Miles McKeller-Smith, Mayra Rodas, Lauren Blair Smith and Kayana Waller.
UNCSA alumni are nominated for Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk awards for their work on off-Broadway productions. The nominees from UNCSA include Camille A. Brown, Gus Halper, Lisa Renkel, Tim Mackabee and Kristina Poe.

For dancer and choreographer Juel D. Lane, life is all about breaking through boundaries, and giving back to the school that gave him the confidence to do it.
With projects including the Metropolitan Opera Ballet of NYC and an international tour of "Rock the Ballet" with Rasta Thomas' Bad Boys of Dance, UNCSA Dance alumnus Kevin Tate can currently be seen as the Lead Gazelle in the Broadway National Tour of Disney's "The Lion King."
