Military Student Resources
Military Student Resources
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is committed to providing an array of resources and services to assist our military affiliated students with successful navigation of their educational goals. Learning Resources extends their full realm of services, resources, and supports to all UNCSA military affiliated students, whether they are enrolled in a high school, undergraduate or graduate program. We recognize the assets veterans bring to campus and to their college experience. We also understand the transitional challenges veterans may encounter as they enter or re-enter a post-secondary educational environment.
Services for Military Students
The following information and services are designed to facilitate ease of access, retention and graduation of all active-duty service members, student veterans, their dependents, spouse, and family members at UNCSA.
UNCSA Military Student Task Force
This intra-campus and interdepartmental committee serves to address campus issues of access, success, and engagement. The UNCSA Military Student Task Force was established in 2014 to better serve our military affiliated students and provide them with a successful learning experience while studying at UNCSA. The Task Force is a collaboration of faculty, staff, students and administrators throughout campus who are dedicated to advocating for our entire military affiliated population.
For more information, contact Chair TaWanna Archia.
Military Benefits are available to UNCSA students. The Office of the Registrar is the certifying official for veterans' educational benefits. For information on benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs, students should visit Veterans Administration Education & Training website.
The UNCSA Registrar’s Office certifies all chapters of education benefits for military-affiliated
students. For more information on the certification process, please refer to the military benefits page on the Registrar’s website.
Stanley M. Zedalis Military Affiliated Scholarship
Established in 2015, the Stanley M. Zedalis Military Affiliated Student Scholarship is an annual grant of $500 designed to support military affiliated students enrolled at UNCSA while honoring the service of a disabled veteran of the US Armed Forces.
Cpt. James Ahn Special Forces Memorial Scholarship
Captain James Ahn, a graduate of UC Riverside and the Claremont McKenna College Army ROTC program, died in 2015 during a parachute training operation while participating with his Special Forces unit in Washington State.
In James’ honor, Gain Service Academy Mission sponsors an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a Special Forces Veteran who is working towards the completion of a higher education degree.
Staff in the office of Learning Resources assist students in the academic environment as they seek balance within an intense and exciting educational experience. Students may choose from a variety of workshops and 1:1 instructional assistance to learn strategies and techniques that can be applied in the classroom and utilized for both personal and professional endeavors.
Free Peer Tutoring is available in a variety of courses for all currently enrolled UNCSA students. Peer tutors are students who have successfully mastered the content of a course and have been recommended by faculty. Tutors work with tutees in one-on-one and group settings.
An additional benefit available through the GI Bill is Tutorial Assistance, which is designed to help pay for tutoring necessary to advance your education. This benefit is a supplement to your regular education benefits via the GI Bill.
The Writing Center is a free support service for all UNCSA students. Tutors in the Writing Center will assist you with the writing process—from brainstorming to the finished paper. The Writing Center is staffed by faculty, peer tutors, and the director and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
UNCSA offers a number of Accessibility Resources. The university is committed to providing equal access to all qualified students in pursuit of their educational and artistic endeavors. Disability-related accommodations are provided on a case-by-case basis and dependent on individual need and supporting documentation.
Accommodations are designed to level the playing field for students with disabilities while maintaining the integrity and standards of our academic and art programs.
As a veteran, you do not need to have a VA disability rating in order to qualify under ADA.
Counseling Services, staffed with licensed counselors available for individual and group sessions, offers students a confidential and secure environment in which to discuss issues ranging from personal problems to life goals. Full-time counselors help students identify stresses, explore acceptable forms of emotional expression and behavior, and establish healthy mental attitudes to facilitate both personal and professional growth.
Health Services are provided by a team consisting of a Board Certified Family Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, and certified medical assistant. UNCSA partners with Wake Forest Baptist Health Sports Medicine Physicians. On-campus weekly clinics are held to evaluate and follow up with students facing injury, providing referrals for imaging, specialist, and other services through Wake Forest Baptist Health Medical Center.
