June 24 - 29, 2018
Join UNCSA faculty member and internationally acclaimed organist, Dr. Timothy Olsen for a week of engaging and insightful instruction for young high school organists. Students that are either emerging with little experience (but with sufficient piano background) or who have already begun some organ instruction are encouraged to apply.
The week's activities include daily lessons, masterclasses, an excursion to a local organ builder, and opportunity to play and learn on world-class instruments in the Winston-Salem area, as well as participation in an Evensong service in a local church. Students will gain valuable insights into practice techniques, healthful manual and pedal technique, various bodies of repertoire, hymn playing and basic improvisation.
Being in the summer program at UNCSA was transformational as I was able to gain experience on historic-styled instruments, and broaden my range of knowledge in French Romantic and other repertoires. It was great being able to play on organs such as UNCSA's Fisk in Crawford Hall, the Flentrop at Salem College, and the wonderful E.M. Skinner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. It was overall a great experience. This immersive week-long experience exposed me to a wide variety of organ works, as well as ways to improve even after I left the camp. I especially enjoyed being a part of the Evensong service at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.
