The State of North Carolina authorizes 12 holidays each year, three of which must fall at Christmas. The campuses of the UNC system observe the same number of holidays as those provided to other state agencies; however, each campus sets its specific holiday schedule based on institutional needs.
Christmas will be observed on December 25, 2023; December 26, 2023; and December 27, 2023.
*To maximize the number of class days during the semester, the Good Friday and Veteran’s
Day holidays with be observed on June 19, 2023, and December 28, 2023.
**To make the Winter Holiday a five-day break, employees will be required to use vacation
leave; bonus leave; special leave; or compensatory time (8 hours total) on December
29, 2023.
University Opens on Tuesday, January 2, 2024
In addition to the listed holidays, all employees have up to eight hours of Personal Observance Leave each calendar year (prorated for part-time employees) which may be used. Refer to the HR Leave Administration webpage for more information.

University Opens on Thursday, January 2, 2025
Personal Observance Leave is also available for eligible employees. In accordance with Executive Order 262: Employee Leave to Recognize a Day of Cultural, Religious, or Personal Significance, the University offers eight hours of Personal Observance Leave for eligible employees. This paid time off is designed for permanent leave-earning employees to use on a day of significance, including days of cultural, religious, or personal observation.
